Last week, I posted about how ingredients put into our beauty and skincare, can be dangerous both long term and short term for our health. Many of these ingredients can mimic hormones within our body wrecking havoc on our natural system leading to a variety of health concerns. Choosing safer alternatives without sacrificing performance is certainly something worth considering. Check out the blog post HERE. Unsure if what you're using is safe? A great website to see what is lurking in your products is the Environmental Working Group, find that HERE. Some of my favorite products over the years have been by Beautycounter and Primally Pure. Although there are lots more out there, make sure to do your research. Here is a helpful list of items to avoid, HERE.
Another area I "Cleaned Up" was the cleaning products I use in my home. This includes all-purpose cleaners, laundry detergents, etc. I've started making my own all purpose cleaner and haven't noticed any changes in how well they perform, plus I save money. WIN! WIN!
Why did I choose to use safer products/make my own? Well, many conventional products out there contain a chemicals such as nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) and ethanolamines. I know, what the heck are those. Bottom line, chemicals like these can lead to reproductory damage, fetus growth, asthma, skin irritation/allergies and more. Check out how the Environmental Working Group rates a common Tide product, HERE. It get's a D, the first thing listed an F. Come on now. Some safer options for laundry detergent are listed HERE, until I share my own recipe.
This weekend, I whipped up a homemade all-purpose cleaner. I bought some glass spray bottles from amazon a little while back, HERE is something similar. Here are the details:
- - 2 Cups distilled water
- - 1/3 Cup Dr. Bronner's Castille Soap, find it HERE.
- - 10-15 drops essential oil, I used an organic tangerine I bought from a local shop in Denver.
Hope you can make small changes like this your life too. For now, Happy Cleaning friends!
